The Short Answer
Boon Mar Ponds sits in Chachoengsao province, east of Bangkok—a province known in fishing circles for its network of quality exotic fishing venues. From central Bangkok, the journey takes 60 to 90 minutes by car under typical conditions, using the Bangkok–Chonburi motorway or the older Bangna–Trad highway depending on traffic and your destination within the province. Public rail reaches Chachoengsao town, and from there a local taxi covers the final leg.
Getting There by Grab
For most Bangkok-based anglers, Grab is the practical default. The route east from Bangkok is served by expressways that move well outside peak hours, and Chachoengsao province is well within the app's coverage area.
Set your destination carefully in the app—rural fishing ponds sometimes require manual map pin adjustment rather than a text search. If the venue's pin shows in an obvious-looking wrong location (middle of a rice field, road junction rather than venue entrance), contact the venue for a GPS coordinate to drop manually.
Journey time from Sukhumvit area: 75 to 100 minutes in normal traffic.
Journey time from Suvarnabhumi Airport: 45 to 70 minutes—the airport's eastern location is a genuine advantage for Chachoengsao-bound anglers.
Chachoengsao province lies east of Bangkok, in the opposite direction to Hua Hin and the southern fishing belt. This makes it an efficient choice for anglers based near Sukhumvit, On Nut, or Suvarnabhumi—you're already pointed the right way.
Getting There from Suvarnabhumi Airport
Suvarnabhumi sits practically at the entry point of the eastern highway corridor, making it the most convenient Bangkok-area airport for Chachoengsao destinations. A Grab from the airport bypasses central Bangkok traffic entirely and heads directly east.
This makes an early-morning arrival + immediate drive to the venue a realistic plan. Land at 6am, collect bags, catch a Grab by 7am, and you could be bankside before 8:30am. That's a legitimate day's fishing recovered from what would otherwise be a wasted transit day.
Getting There by Rail Plus Taxi
Thailand's State Railway operates services from Hua Lamphong and Makkasan (Bangkok City) stations to Chachoengsao Junction. Journey time varies by service type from around 45 minutes to over an hour. Trains run throughout the day; third-class services are inexpensive, first and second class air-conditioned options are more comfortable.
From Chachoengsao town station, a local motorcycle taxi, songthaew, or metered taxi covers the remaining distance to the ponds. This final leg requires local knowledge—ask the venue in advance for the nearest landmark or instruct a taxi driver accordingly.
This route suits budget travellers or those who enjoy the rail experience. It adds complexity for anglers with heavy gear, but works well for light-packing day-trippers.
The rail route to Chachoengsao is genuinely pleasant—small-town Thailand slides past the windows at a pace that reminds you why this country has such hold on fishing travellers. It's not the fastest option, but it's not supposed to be.
Getting There by Private Transfer
If your party is three or more anglers, or you're carrying a full complement of tackle including multiple rod tubes, a pre-arranged private minivan or estate car makes economic sense. Several Bangkok-based fishing tour operators include Boon Mar on their day-trip itineraries with transfer included in the package price.
A private driver for a day-trip also solves the return journey—they wait at the venue, load the gear when you're ready, and deliver you back to your hotel without the faff of booking a Grab from a rural pond at dusk.
Common Pitfalls
Bangna–Trad Highway congestion. The older surface road east of Bangkok is heavily used by trucks and can bog down significantly. The motorway is faster and worth the toll. Check Google Maps or Waze for real-time conditions before committing to a route.
Weekend traffic heading east. Weekends see Bangkok residents heading toward Bang Saen, Pattaya, and Chonburi beaches along the same eastern corridor. An early Saturday departure—before 7am—keeps you ahead of this traffic. A midday Saturday departure does not.
Assuming Grab is instant in Chachoengsao town. Driver availability is lower outside Bangkok's core. If you're using rail and need a taxi for the final leg, arrange it before the train arrives or be prepared to wait.
