Andaman Coast — August 2026 Fishing Report
August is the Andaman's deepest monsoon month and requires no pretence: the offshore is closed, the famous beaches are empty, and the landscape is doing the dramatic, rain-soaked thing that postcard Phuket is never photographed doing. The angler who understands August comes for Cheow Lan Lake — which in this month achieves its annual maximum flood level and the most extraordinary freshwater landscape in southern Thailand — and for the quiet wild fishing of Phang-Nga Bay's upper mangrove channels. These are not consolation prizes. Cheow Lan at full pool in August is genuinely one of the finest freshwater fishing experiences available anywhere in Southeast Asia. Come for that. Leave the offshore slot for October.
Water and Weather
August delivers the southwest monsoon's maximum impact to the Andaman coast. Phuket and Krabi typically receive their highest monthly rainfall totals of the year in August — 380–500mm is typical — distributed across near-daily rain events. Wind speeds from the southwest average 15–25 knots at sea, with stronger gusts during active systems. Swells of 3–5 metres are standard in open water; the western-facing beaches of Phuket experience direct swell exposure.
Cheow Lan Lake at full pool is a different and spectacular version of itself. The entire submerged forest that rings the lake — old-growth trees drowned by the Ratchaprapha Dam's rising water in 1987 — is maximally flooded, with some tree canopy sections accessible at the water surface by boat. The misty, overcast conditions of August add an atmospheric quality to the lake that the dry-season clear-sky version cannot match. Surface temperatures at the lake run 26–28°C — slightly cooler than the coast due to the inland elevation.
Phang-Nga Bay's tidal channels and mangrove systems are fully charged with monsoon water. The bay's shallow areas have expanded with the raised tidal baseline and the mangrove root systems are accessible to fish at higher states of tide than at any other time of year.
What's Biting Now
Cheow Lan giant snakehead — At maximum lake level in August, the submerged forest sections are the most accessible and productive of the year. Snakehead navigate between flooded tree trunks at eye level and the surface takes are unforgettable — a fish surging from between tree roots to engulf a rubber frog on the water surface, amid drowned forest and karst towers. Walk-the-dog lures and hollow-body frogs worked at very slow pace with extended pauses produce best results. First light through 8 am is the prime window, before the occasional tourist boat traffic begins.
Cheow Lan featherback — Present throughout the submerged forest at various depths. In August, at peak water level, featherback school in the upper canopy zone of the drowned trees, sitting just below the surface in calm water. Small floating lures twitched across the surface and allowed to pause above the submerged canopy trigger takes that are visible from above the fish. This is unusual and completely captivating fishing.
Cheow Lan giant gourami — Consistently accessible on fruit and bread baits. The raft-house guides at Cheow Lan can identify the preferred gourami feeding areas at current water levels. A reliable species for guests who want consistent activity alongside the snakehead and featherback target sessions.
Phang-Nga Bay barramundi — The August high-water period in Phang-Nga Bay gives barramundi their maximum range into the mangrove system. Longer, winding runs into the back channels from the main bay produce barra on lures worked around root systems at depths that are accessible in August but dry or shallow at other times of year. This is the best month for Phang-Nga Bay barra in the seasonal calendar.
Phang-Nga mangrove jack — Alongside barra in the bay channels. August's high tidal baseline means fish can access structure that is normally above waterline. Work lures tight to exposed root tips on the upper tidal sections for the best jack encounters.
Laem Phromthep grouper — The southern Phuket headland produces through August on days between active systems. A clean 6-hour window appears reliably between major rain events even in the peak monsoon month. Fresh squid on bottom rigs under the headland ledges accounts for coral grouper and honeycomb grouper in the 1.5–4kg range.
Krabi inner bay snapper — The sheltered inner sections of Ao Nang and Railay Bay at Krabi hold resident snapper and small grouper populations that are fishable year-round. August day trips from Krabi town into the inner bay area by hired longtail produce snapper consistently on bait rigs.
What to Target This Month
Top pick: Cheow Lan submerged forest snakehead and featherback. Book a three-night raft-house stay with access to a fishing-oriented guide for dawn sessions. The August fishing at Cheow Lan is the best of the year and the experience of being on the lake at dawn — the mist, the karst, the flooded trees, the fish — is something that stays with an angler for years. Book Art's Riverview Lodge or Khao Sok Riverside at least a month in advance for August; these venues fill.
Second pick: Phang-Nga Bay upper mangrove barra. August is the peak of this specific fishery. A longtail hire from Tha Dan pier near Phang-Nga town, 3–4 hours in the upper bay channels, produces the year's best barra numbers in these waters. Plan around a morning with no active storm in the preceding 12 hours — the channels fish best after a dry overnight when the bay's suspended sediment has settled.
Third pick: kayak fishing in Phang-Nga Bay. A growing number of kayak-based anglers explore the sheltered inner sections of Phang-Nga Bay through the monsoon months. Several operators in Phang-Nga town and at the bay's tourist piers offer single-kayak hire. The calm, sheltered bay conditions in August are entirely safe for experienced paddlers, and the combination of spectacular scenery — the limestone stacks, the caves, the mangrove channels — with barra and jack fishing on light lure gear is an outstanding combination.
What to Avoid
The offshore Andaman is not an option in August regardless of what any operator tells you. Similan Islands, Surin Islands, and Mergui Archipelago trips are off the calendar until October. Avoid planning sessions at Laem Phromthep during days with active swell from the southwest — the headland's rock platforms are entirely unsafe during the 2–3-day swell events that arrive periodically in August. The road to Khao Sok via Takua Pa from Phuket can have sections of standing water after heavy overnight rain — allow extra travel time on mornings following major rain events.
August Cheow Lan Booking
August is Cheow Lan's most-sought accommodation month, particularly during the Thai long weekend around August 12 (HM the Queen Mother's Birthday, a national holiday). The raft houses on the lake fill completely on the August 12 weekend period every year. If you are not booking this specific period, standard August weekends are also in demand. Book at minimum four to six weeks ahead for any August Cheow Lan stay. Weekday stays from Tuesday to Thursday remain more accessible.
Venue Spotlight
Cheow Lan Lake at Maximum Pool (Khao Sok NP, Surat Thani) — In August the lake achieves its definitive character. The raft houses on the lake — Art's Riverview Lodge, Khao Sok Riverside Lodge, and a small number of additional operators — sit in a completely sheltered basin surrounded by the most dramatic karst landscape in Thailand. The fishing from the raft house jetties at dawn, before guided fishing sessions begin, produces snakehead and featherback within casting distance of the accommodation. Fishing guide services are available through the lodges for more systematic lake sessions.
Phang-Nga Bay mangrove channels (Phang-Nga Province) — The August high-water state puts the mangrove channel fishing at its annual best. Hire a longtail from the pier at Tha Dan on the northeastern edge of Phang-Nga Bay. The most productive channels are the Ban Bang Mot system to the northwest of the main pier and the Koh Panyee back channels to the south. Both require knowledge from the longtail driver — find an operator who fishes these waters rather than one who runs tourist tours.
Ao Nang and Railay inner bay (Krabi Province) — The sheltered limestone-walled bays of the Railay area are accessible by longtail from Ao Nang pier. Inner bay fishing for mangrove snapper, barred queenfish, and small grouper around the limestone karst features is uncrowded in August and productive on light spinning tackle. A half-day session here combines well with an afternoon exploring the extraordinary Railay cave systems.
Logistics in August
August is the cheapest month of the year to visit Phuket and Krabi. Five-star hotels that run 8,000–15,000 baht per night in December sell for 2,000–4,000 baht in August. Flight tickets from Bangkok to Phuket are similarly reduced. The infrastructure functions normally — airport, roads, food, services — just without the crowds. This is genuinely the best value month to experience the Andaman coast, offset only by the offshore fishing closure and the guaranteed rain.
Khao Sok from Phuket airport is 2.5–3 hours on sealed highway. Road conditions on the main routes are not affected by August monsoon. The raft house transfer from the main pier at the Ratchaprapha dam involves a 30–45-minute longtail ride into the lake; this transfer operates regardless of rainfall as the lake is sheltered from wind.
Looking Ahead to September
September is when the Andaman's annual cycle begins its long-awaited turn. The monsoon starts to weaken noticeably from mid-September onward, and by late September the first cautious offshore operators begin monitoring conditions for an early-October re-opening. The offshore calendar restarts in October — Similan National Park typically opens for the marine season on October 15, and charter operations resume from Phuket and Khao Lak within days of the park opening. The wait is almost over. Book September Cheow Lan if you want the final peak-water window, but prioritise October for your first offshore Andaman adventure.
