Gulf of Thailand — June 2026 Fishing Preview

Here is the thing about June on the Gulf that the Andaman crowd never quite grasps: while the west coast shuts down and offshore charter operators spend three months on maintenance and misery, the Gulf side opens up. The southwest monsoon, the same weather system that hammers Phuket with 3-metre swells, barely reaches the eastern side of the peninsula. The Gulf in June is typically calm enough for comfortable charter fishing on most days, warm, productive, and — because the dive-season crowds have shifted elsewhere — remarkably uncrowded. June 2026 is setting up as an excellent month. Giant trevally inshore, yellowfin offshore, the squid jigging at its annual reliable peak, and Hua Hin shore fishing that punches well above what most visiting anglers expect.

Water and Weather

The Gulf coast from Cha-Am south to Chumphon receives 100–150mm of rainfall in June — significant but nothing like the Andaman's monsoon deluge. Rain arrives in short, heavy bursts rather than sustained systems, and most days offer substantial fishable windows. Sea surface temperatures across the northern Gulf run 29–31°C; the southern Gulf around Koh Samui and Koh Tao is similar, with slightly cooler upwelling conditions around the southern pinnacles in the deeper water.

Visibility in the main Gulf channel is generally good through June — 5–10 metres at most productive offshore grounds. Inshore around the river mouths from the Phetchaburi and Pranburi rivers creates localised turbidity zones, but these are confined and, if anything, they concentrate baitfish that draw predators. Seas on the Gulf are typically under 1 metre in the mornings, building to 1–1.5 metres in the afternoons with the sea breeze. Comfortable charter fishing weather for most anglers.

What's Biting Now

Giant trevally (GT) — The opening of the GT inshore season is the June story on the Gulf. Schools of fish in the 5–15kg range push into shallow rocky areas along the northern Gulf coast from Hua Hin south toward Prachuap Khiri Khan. Anglers on shore with 40–60lb setups casting large surface poppers and stickbaits at dawn connect with these fish on a reliable basis. Charter anglers targeting the same schools from small boats with the ability to reposition quickly see even better results. The larger individuals — fish in the 20–35kg range — are more solitary and associated with specific offshore pinnacle structures south of Koh Tao.

Longtail tuna — The Gulf's most reliably available pelagic through the June-July-August window. Longtails school on the baitfish concentrations that the monsoon currents aggregate, and both trolling and jigging produce them. The area between Ban Krut and Chumphon produces particularly consistent longtail action in June.

Spanish mackerel (Narrow-barred) — Active on similar grounds to longtail tuna. High-speed trolling with feathers and skirted lures covers the productive grounds efficiently. A 30–50kg fish is realistic from the better offshore charter days.

Yellowfin tuna — Present around the southern Gulf pinnacles, particularly the seamounts south of Koh Tao. Jigging with 200–350g metal jigs around structure produces yellowfin in the 10–30kg range. Some offshore overnight charter trips targeting these fish from Koh Samui and Koh Tao operate in June.

Wahoo — Less consistently targeted but encountered as bycatch on high-speed trolling runs in the deeper southern Gulf. Their presence is irregular but enough to justify rigging one rod with a wire-leader wahoo lure on any offshore trip.

Cobia — One of the Gulf's most underrated June targets. Cobia are attracted to floating debris, whale sharks (occasionally present in June), and any offshore structure. They take live bait, heavy lures, and fly presentations. A 15–30kg cobia is a genuinely outstanding fish to encounter.

Barramundi (inshore) — The river mouth areas around Cha-Am, Hua Hin, and Prachuap Khiri Khan produce barramundi on incoming tides in June. These fish are using the monsoon-elevated river outflow to navigate between marine and brackish environments. Target the first two hours of the incoming tide with subsurface lures around structure.

Squid — The commercial squid boats that light up the Gulf horizon at night are there for a reason. Reef squid are concentrated in the 10–30m zone throughout the Gulf in June, and squid jigging at night from chartered boats or from the jetties at Pattaya and Koh Lanta produces reliably. Good eating and excellent live bait for everything else on the list.

What to Target This Month

Top pick: GT inshore at Prachuap Khiri Khan's rocky points. The stretch of coast from Sam Roi Yot south to Ao Manao bay has consistent GT schools in June, and the shore-fishing access is excellent — this is not complicated technical fishing, it requires appropriate gear and early starts. Ao Manao bay itself is restricted (Royal Thai Air Force base) but the adjacent coast is accessible and productive.

Second pick: longtail tuna and Spanish mackerel on a Hua Hin or Chumphon day charter. Half-day trolling and jigging trips from these ports are affordable, well-organised, and producing good catches through June. The 20–40km runs to productive grounds are comfortable in the Gulf's moderate conditions.

Third pick: jigging for yellowfin and dogtooth tuna around Koh Tao's pinnacles. The southern Gulf pinnacle system — Sail Rock, Chumphon Pinnacle, and the unnamed structures further south — concentrate fish that you cannot access from the northern Gulf. An overnight trip from Koh Samui or Koh Tao dedicated to jigging these structures in June is a premium experience.

What to Avoid

The Pattaya inshore grounds are reliable for squid and some inshore species but the area immediately around Pattaya Bay has seen heavy pressure and the fish quality — particularly barramundi and snapper — is significantly below what the coast further south offers. If you're based in Pattaya for convenience, a day run south toward Rayong or Sattahip accesses much better fishing. Avoid the river mouth areas immediately after major rain events in the upper catchment — turbidity spikes can make these areas unproductive for a day or two.

The Gulf's GT season peaks in June and July, but the fish are tide-sensitive inshore. Pinning your shore sessions to the two hours either side of dawn on an outgoing tide is the single most effective adjustment most visiting anglers can make. Turning up at 9 am expecting the same school activity as 6 am consistently disappoints.

Venue Spotlight

Hat Wanakon and Ao Ban Krut (Prachuap Khiri Khan Province) — A stretch of coast south of Hua Hin that deserves far more attention from the fishing community than it receives. The rocky headlands separating the small bays along this coast hold resident GT, grouper, and snapper populations. Simple onshore guesthouses along the coast provide accommodation with no booking difficulty in June, and the fishing is genuinely wild and lightly pressured.

Hua Hin Municipal Pier and offshore grounds (Prachuap Khiri Khan) — Hua Hin's charter fleet is smaller than Pattaya but well-suited to the Gulf's June-to-August pelagic season. The pier area itself is productive at night for squid jigging, and day-charter operators like Hua Hin Fishing and similar outfits run regular trips to the longtail and mackerel grounds 25–40km offshore. Walk-in bookings are usually possible in June.

Koh Tao (Surat Thani Province) — The island is primarily a diving destination and the dive season runs through June, which means the accommodation infrastructure is functioning and the boats are running. Several dive operators have branched into light-tackle fishing charters targeting the pinnacle system; Koh Tao Fishing and similar outfits can be contacted directly. The combination of dramatic underwater topography and productive jigging grounds makes Koh Tao a genuinely exceptional June fishing destination for anglers comfortable with the southern Gulf location.

Logistics in June

The Gulf coast from Hua Hin to Chumphon is in mild low season — not empty, but quieter than December to February. Hotel rates in Hua Hin drop 20–30% from peak. The resort infrastructure is fully operational and restaurants along the beachfront are trading normally. Drive time from Bangkok to Hua Hin is 2.5–3 hours without traffic (start before 7 am or after 8 pm to avoid Phetchaburi city congestion). Koh Samui and Koh Tao are accessible by flight from Bangkok (40 minutes) or overnight ferry from Chumphon — book flights ahead as the routes are popular with domestic tourists in June.

Charter bookings for the better-known Hua Hin and Koh Samui operators are advisable 1–2 weeks in advance but rarely need longer lead times in June. Most operators are happy to accommodate walk-in enquiries.

Looking Ahead to July

July consolidates everything that June starts. GT schools persist inshore through the month, with some reports of larger individual fish as the season progresses. Longtail tuna abundance increases as baitfish schools build through the monsoon period. The southern Gulf pinnacle fishing reaches its annual peak for dogtooth tuna in July and August. For anglers who plan ahead, the Gulf's June-to-August season is one of the most accessible and cost-effective saltwater fishing windows in Southeast Asia.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is June a good month for Gulf of Thailand fishing charters?

Yes — June is one of the Gulf's best months for inshore pelagics and marks the opening of the prime GT season. The Gulf is sheltered from the southwest monsoon by the Malay Peninsula and generally fishes well through June, July, and August when the Andaman coast is effectively closed.

Are giant trevally accessible from shore on the Gulf in June?

GT schools push inshore in June and are accessible to both charter and land-based anglers. Rocky points and shallow reef structures along the northern Gulf coast between Hua Hin and Chumphon are productive shore-fishing locations. Target the first and last two hours of daylight with large stickbaits or poppers.

How does the Koh Tao and Koh Samui area fish in June compared to the southern Gulf?

The southern Gulf (Koh Samui, Koh Tao, Koh Phangan) sees strong pelagic activity in June with yellowfin tuna, dogtooth tuna, and wahoo available on offshore structure. Koh Tao's underwater pinnacles are particularly good for jigging. Charter infrastructure around Koh Samui is well established and most operators run year-round, adjusting to weather windows.
